Bemindwyne is situated in the heart of the village, the perfect site for McGregor’s only garagiste cellar where owner, winemaker and cellar worker Ilse Van Dijk can be found most days. At harvest time she may be out collecting her chosen grapes from various wine farms in the Breede river and Breedekloof valleys, and soon after this the intoxicating aromas of crushed grapes waft from the former garage set back in the grounds of a venerable village homestead. It is nearly three years since Ilse set up herhand-operated equipment, a development made possible thanks to a supportive husband and family members. This was a decade-long ambition that came to fruition after her maiden vintage in 2014, with the opening of her little cellar in June the following year. All a long way from Potchefstroom where Ilse grew up with a burning desire to become creative and enjoy new experiences. She enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch for a BSc Agriculture, majoring in Viticulture and Oenology, and these specialised subjects provided the know-how for her to embark on her winemaking career. She gained experience over the next 16 years, making a variety of fine wines at a number of different cellars, while nurturing her dream of her own wine brand . Today she takes great pride in her range of handcrafted wines that have drawn high praise from near and far – with many fans being disappointed at finding their favourite label sold out when returning for more. Both passionate and professional, Ilse is a fine example of what a successful winemaker needs to succeed in a tough but exciting environment.
WINES FOR TASTING AND FOR SALE Not all these will necessarily be available at any one time, as Ilse produces very limited editions. On the other hand there may be a new label to sample that is not on this list. Bone dry and sophisticated her Brut MCC non-vintage is a connoisseur choice, zero dosage, produced from 70% chardonnay and pinot noir, its crisp notes presenting flavours of winter melon and citrus. Robertson grapes went into her sauvignon blanc,VINTAGE??? which is zesty with tropical notes, not overly acidic and some flint on the palate. Moving to red, the Bemind Cinsaut 2016 is a triumph: innovative and unique to the valley, the grapes were sourced from 30-year-old Breedekloof dryland vines. Fresh and light-textured, the characteristic cinsaut quality is in charming balance with berry fruit flavours. The Limited release Syrah 2012, which spent 36 months in French second fill oak, is also fresh and succulent with sweet spice on the palate.
STOCKING UP Email Ilse for up-to-date information on buying wines from the cellar. Bemind wines are also stocked by LaVerne boutique in Robertson and Stilbaai Wynkelders.
LAST WORD From Ilse:
“I aim to make wines both elegant and classic, wines that are true to the fruit. And these are wines of which you can – and will – enjoy more than one glass.”
