The gleaming white walls of the substantial McGregor cellar have been a landmark in the valley since 1948, and this year the winery is proudly celebrating its 70th birthday! The co-operative enterprise is owned by the 33 farmers who produce about 14 000 tons of wine grapes every year, which the winemaking team transform into a whopping 10 million litres for both the local and international bottled and bulk markets.
Today an impressive range of wines is produced from six white and six red varietals. The former are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc Colombar, White Muscadel and Hanepoot, which account for 80% of wine production. The reds are Pinotage, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Ruby Cabernet, and Red Muscadel. The vineyards flourish in three river valleys with varying microclimates – each with a distinctive terroir – which result in diverse wine styles.
Since their maiden harvest in April 1948 McGregor Wines have a fine story to tell, one that reflects the development and increasing sophistication of the Cape wine industry. Highlights include the installation of the first stainless steel tanks back in 1972 while in the mid-eighties the first of four fermentation cellars was built. Cooling facilities were upgraded in the late nineties, as new destemmers and crushers were installed for improved processing.
In 2002 the new red wine cellar was built, followed by the laboratory and the tasting room which attracts a steady stream of visitors throughout the year.
McGregor Winery is proud of both its high standards and competitive prices as the cellar continues to innovate, producing exciting wines to please the palates of their customers. Both cellarmaster Jacques Jordaan and winemaker Elmo du Plessis are experienced and talented professionals who are prepared to go the extra mile and be flexible, as they uphold the cellar’s vision of ethical and honest business agreements and relationships.
The winery also pays tribute to its Scottish heritage, displaying the McGregor tartan on every bottle, a logo that contributes to the wines becoming a well-recognised brand on the retail shelves.

The range is extensive, offering a wine to suit every palate and purse. There are five whites, a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and a very popular off-dry Colombard. The Delicious Monster, a blend of 60% Chenin Blanc, 20 % Chardonnay and 20% Muscat is also flying off the shelves.
Turning to reds, the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2015 leads the way, but there is another option, the 2016 cabernet, which comes in handy 250ml bottles. Pinotage 2016 and Shiraz 2013 are stocked while the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend is a favourite with locals.
Dessert wines of good quality that are affordably priced are integral to the cellar’s reputation. They include a red and a white Muscadel, Cape Ruby Port and the 2008 Cape Vintage Port.
The two flagship wines are not to be missed: the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2015 and the Vintage Port, labelled Cape Late Bottled Vintage. Red and white grape juice complete the ranges.

Along with buying from the tasting room, wines can be ordered online through the website and deliveries arranged.. McGregor wines are stocked by three outlets in Robertson, being Laverne, Platform 62 and Robertson TOPS.
Selected labels are stocked by Trader Joe in North America and WeinlandAbayan in Germany.
